About Activated Carbon
Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal, is a form of carbon commonly used to filter contaminants from water and air, among many other uses. It is processed (activated) to have small, low-volume pores that increase the surface area available for adsorption (which is not the same as absorption) or chemical reactions.
Due to its high degree of microporosity, one gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 3,000 m2 (32,000 sq ft) as determined by gas adsorption. Charcoal, before activation, has a specific surface area in the range of 2.0 – 5.0 m2/g. An activation level sufficient for useful application may be obtained solely from high surface area. Further chemical treatment often enhances adsorption properties.
Activated carbon are characterized by their pore size. Pore size have been classified into three type. Macropores [d = > 25 nm], Mesopores [d = 2-25 nm], and a large number of micropores [d =< 2 nm]. Micropores are developed during activation and contribute mainly to the surface area. Macropores do not add much to the surface area but provide passageway for the adsorbate to the micropores where adsorption does occur.
Activated carbon is carbon produced from carbonaceous source materials such as bamboo, coconut husk, wood, coal etc.

WASHED ACTIVATED CARBON
Powdered carbon is washed with acid and then repeatedly with water & dried to minimize impurities like ASH contents. IRON contents. ACID soluble. Heavy METALS.Etc. which is extensively used in liquid phase application basically to remove undesired colour, smell and other impurities in many industries such as basic drugs, fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industries.
STEAM (UNWASHED) ACTIVATED CARBON
The steam activated process is done by activating the charcoal in a rotary kiln by heating at high temperatures by steam. The activated carbon that comes out from the kiln is called unwashed activated carbon. The gradation of different qualities of activated carbon is done on the basis of Methylene blue value and iodine value.activated carbon is widely used in process destined to purify, discolor, recuperate and remove odors at low cost and superior efficiency.
CHEMICALLY ACTIVATED CARBON
Chemical activation is generally used for the production of activated carbon from sawdust, wood or peat. The raw material is impregnated with a strong dehydrating agent, typically phosphoric acid (H3PO4) or zinc chloride (ZnCl2) mixed into a paste and then heated to temperatures of 500 - 800°C to activate the carbon. The resultant activated carbon is washed, dried and ground to powder. Activated carbons produced by chemical activation generally exhibit a very 'open' pore structure, ideal for the adsorption of large molecules.
